book recommendations

On display in the library are great book projects created by Mrs. Crete's class. These projects were created to encourage students to check out these books. Mrs. Crete's class wrote persuasive essays about why each book should win the Bartlett Fiction Award and made commercials advertising the book. Be sure to look at the projects and check out the books!

Thanks so much Mrs. Crete's class!

Our First Reading Raffle

Today we had our first Reading Safari Raffle. This was very exciting! All students who have turned in a reading log were entered into the raffle. We had 114 students entered and I was able to give out 114 prizes!

The students are already asking when the next raffle will be. I'm not sure yet, but most likely in late November.

We have 60% of the students at Bartlett participating in the Reading Safari. This is a GREAT start.

Keep up the good job reading!

Flu Prevention Tips from Dr. Clarke

Dr. Clarke is a practicing doctor in Baltimore and a part time rapper. He wrote this rap to teach kids about how to prevent the spread of the H1N1 flu virus.

Here in the library we do clean the keyboards and mice everyday with Chlorox Wipes. On a busy day we can have 80 students pass through the computer lab. We all need to do our part to prevent the spread of germs!

Enjoy the video!

Why We Love the Library

To celebrate National Library Week, I asked the students to leave comments about why they love the library. Here are some of the things Bartlett students are saying about the library:

I like the library because they have books that I do not have at home.

It makes me feel like I'm in the place I'm reading about.

I like the library because it is fun to read books and the staff is really helpful.

The library is like a big dictionary.

I like the library because I can find out stuff.

Reading rocks!

I like the library because I like to get inspiration from books to write my own stories.

Reading is really good for your brain cells.

National Library Week

This week is National Library Week!

The Bartlett Elementary School Library has much to celebrate. Our goal is to get books, magazines, and other reading materials in the hands of children. We check out approximately 1100 copies per month that school is in session.

There are new books on our shelves all the time. Our library collection has been generously supported by the PTA book fairs, the Goffstown Rotary, and the Goffstown School Board. Numerous community members also have donated books that are either put into circulation or used for our reading incentive program or book swap in June.

Over thirty different students in fourth grade volunteer throughout the year to help bring these books back to the library and get them ready for check-in. Their service helps the whole school so much.

A special thanks goes to the library aides completing their service this week:

Courtney, Kylie, Ashley, Alexa Z., Alex K
Megan, Olivia, Rosie, Heather, Maddison

April is National Poetry Month

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month?

Check out some of our great poetry books in the library. Some of my favorites are the
You Read to Me, I'll Read to You, series. These are great books to share with a friend. We also have poetry books by Shel Silverstein. He's one of my favorite poets.

Here is an animated version of his poem, "The Crocodile's Toothache."

Enjoy

Bartlett Reads Because of Winn Dixie

Bartlett Elementary School invites all families and staff to read the wonderful book, Because of Winn Dixie. On Tuesday, March 17th, we will have special All School Meeting to talk about this great opportunity. Be sure to look for the reading calendar and letter and book in your child's backpack on Tuesday.

Why are we doing this?

1. Because of Winn Dixie is a great book.
2. Studies show that children who read and are read to do better in school.
3. Sharing a common book is a fun way to bring the school community together.

Can this count for the reading incentive program?

YES! Absolutely.

Speaking of the Dive into Reading program, a special congratulations goes to Mrs. Audley's class of first and second graders who reached 100% participation! There are several other classes that are very close to reading 100%. Keep up the great reading. The last day for reading papers is May 15th.

The graph you see reflects the number of reading logs turned in as of December 15th. We have over 175 reading logs turned in. Many children have turned in their third reading log already. The 100 day reader t-shirts have been ordered. If your child has not turned in a reading log yet, it is not too late to start. We are aiming for 100% participation this year. Keep up the good work!

Student Library Aides

A big thank you goes out to the ten students who served as Student Library Aides during the fall of this school year. These children go around to each classroom and collect library books and bring them back to the library, take the date due cards out and sort them so we can check them in. This is no small job. Since September we have checked out over 4500 books and materials. All of those books and materials need to come back! These children have hauled that many books over to the library. Thank you so much!
